Installation Instructions

Mac

On a Mac, Sophie has a simple installation process.

1. Download Sophie.
2. Double-click on the .dmg file to open it. This will put Sophie disk image on your desktop.
3. Double click the Sophie disk image to open it, if it is not open already.
4. Drag the Sophie icon to your Applications folder.
5. Open your Applications folder and double click Sophie to start the application.

Windows

We highly recommend installing Quicktime if you're using Sophie on Windows. Without Quicktime, Sophie can't use as many media types. Quicktime is a free download from Apple.

You can download the Windows installer for Sophie. When you finish downloading, double-click on the .exe file and follow the installation instructions.

To install Sophie on Windows using the .zip file use the built in .zip extractor, or you can use something like WinZip and follow these instructions.

1. Download Sophie

2. Double-click on the .zip file to open it. You will have to pick or create a folder to hold the contents of the .zip file. (for example, C:\Program Files\Sophie) This will put Sophie into that folder.

3. Open the folder in Explorer, and double click on the Sophie icon to start the application.

Create a Windows Shortcut

Creating a Windows shortcut will allow you to access Sophie from your Start menu.

1. You can create a shortcut to the application by right-clicking on the Sophie icon, and selecting "Create Shortcut". This will create a shortcut icon in that folder.
2. Copy that icon and place it in the C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu\Programs. You can now launch Sophie from your Start menu.

Linux

The process of installing Sophie on Linux will vary slightly depending on your flavor. This basic installation uses the command line to install Sophie.

1. Download Sophie.
2. Unzip Sophie, using the command unzip SophieXXXXXXXX-X.zip. If you use the directory option (-d), you must supply the directory name. Without it, Sophie will be unzipped in the current directory.
3. Open the Sophie document by double-clicking on Sophie.sh in the newly unzipped Sophie directory. This will launch Sophie.

Requirements

Sophie can be installed on Mac iBooks, PowerBooks, PowerMacs, MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs, although performance on older Macs won't be as fast as on newer processors.

Sophie can also be installed on Windows XP and Linux machines with hardware configurations that meet the requirements.
