Brooklyn Whale Tale
April 19, 2007

A baby Minkie whale swam into the Gowanus Canal. Like Ahab, I tried to find her, but found instead a beautifully battered landscape; populated by people doing interesting jobs. I’m working on a painting to go with the vid…. check back later.
addenda: In a sad note, the news reports that the little whale beached itself and died lastnight. Somehow in trying to move it, the whale sank to the bottom of the shipping channel. Having no luck seeing it, I’d convinced myself it had escaped harm, rather it had escaped this mortal coil…. like moby mouse.

It’s possible that this whale was being used by the military, much like the dolphins the Navy is using to protect our underwater assets from terrorists in California. If that’s the case, it would explain why the Army Corp of Engineers took an interest in it…it would also explain why their knot slipped and it sunk. I’m guessing that it weighed more than they expected and they realized they’d need more equipment to get it out, but they couldn’t risk people seeing any of it’s extra gear or weaponry, so they sunk it until they could come back.
All of this is pure speculation, but one thing I know is a fact is that the Army Corp of Engineers knows how to tie a strong knot.

probably not. It was an infant… that sort of thing takes a lot of training…. but interesting paranoid speculation is always fun.
