The next day brought with it the winter thant broke the back at summer’s fall. It was a summer place to be certain, but they’d rented it for the Autumn as the rates were cheaper and there was no one for hiking, nor skiing and it was the great in between between the mountains and the lake.
“Snow,” he said.
“We should go up into the mountains,” she said. “Is it far?”
“It’s Switzerland,” He said. “There is no such thing as far. We’ll just hop on the train and go up and soak in the snow and die Alpen Lumen.”
“The what now?”
“Some kind of magic light that comes down with a beautiful sadness.”
“How Japanese.”
“Truly,” he said and laughed because it was easier to find a Japanese in Interlaken than a Swiss.

    Cam-fire story_

ah yes- Alex! die Alpen Lumen! I remember it well… My memory of die Alpen Lumen is in the form of giant golden red rock steeples chasing the west sky, catching the sunset’s last rays and holding them- holding for a long instant, as though each peak were a finger of immortal Apollo’s open fist- and then flinging it slowly, surely- back to us with bassooning tempo that only a high mountain has, us marvellling at the miracle of the beacon of gold glimmering light shining long into the deep cobalt blue of the twilight sky, tinting our skin, our eyes, our hair. Our smiles grew from the golden blast, the tear foam in our eyelids sparkled like Olympian dew- there it is, irretrievable- still floating, the air, a gossamer in a web of no future, no past.
This was the first time that I knew what hope was, that hope was real, and lived among us mortals.
After it wrapped around us and moved away, we drove on in its aura, in silence.
There was no bread in the picture- just the stones, the road, the whirring engine, the warm summer wind, the star flow through the open window of my friend’s red Audi.
