yeah its funny… I mean I’ve been going to Coney since the seventies and I’m fairly familiar with it’s heyday from silent films… so it’s always seemed quite the crumbling beauty…. It needs some TLC, but the way they do things these days is so cookie cutter corporate…one wishes for the roaring oddness of Luna Park and Steeplechase… but anyway… I’m sort of obsessed with the changing face of Brooklyn.
cool link…. Leave it to Luna Park to have the skinny on Coney. I guess that Coney is more or less the beginning Las Vegas type architecture. It is intersting to see early edison films of it, because I think the architectural style of Coney influenced movie palace architecture too…. all of this leads to the kind of sythetic theatrical spaces we live in now… Which brings us back to Disnification… Maybe Coney is where Disneyfying began (certainly Disney used Coney as a model for Disneyland and world, etc.)… It has always been a fictional/ theatrical space….just thinking.

The library of congress website has some amazing early footage of coney island, including the steeplechase and luna park.
