The Crystal City
April 13, 2006

Spent a great night at Monkey Town in Williamsburg watching Fellini’s 8 1/2 at quarter speed and listening to stories and eating and drinking, but not the internal organs of beasts and fowl, but only lamb chops and strange leaves. The bathroom had this mural of orange crystal hexagons and a sound scape of church bells and I felt right at home in the epiphany of rivers.
This is the upper corner of the bathroom wall and I liked how the lines worked against the space… I used an iron railing as an impromptu tripod to shoot the city at night and used it’s negative. My original plan was just to justapose the two images below in my usual style… so I wanted to show that too.

The iron railing looks a lot like those images of DNA you used to see in textbooks: like this or this.

It does, but it’s not an iron railing…its the lights of the city strung out reflected in the water … I saw somewhere that there’s a couple of guys who make DNA art portraits of people. You send them a swab from your cheek and they make a big beautiful print that looks like an abstract painting. Sort of kitschy, but also sort of cool.
