Here's what we'll be working on for future releases of CommentPress:

8

now
• cleaning up functions
• widgetizing (support for widgets and creating CommentPress specific widgets)
• cleaning up and standardizing the sidebars (part of widgetizing)

4

soon
We need some feedback. We'd like to make it possible for people to view all the comments on a page at once, but we thought might change things in CommentPress. So here's a document that illustrates a few of those changes. Does anyone see any problems?
All Comments Draft (pdf)

3

later
• Get our code to validate as XHTML
• View all comments on a page
• Remove "comments-by-user" and "comments-by-section" and "general-comments" files and add them to functions.php
• "bookmarking" feature allowing readers to save places in a doc
• More style sheet organization, standardization and cleanup, and more explanatory comments
• *Use regular expression to do the replacing of content instead of the array exploding - (we could use some help on this one)

done
• Rename subtheme files to standard theme filenames
• Create a sub-theme folder and allow subthemes to extend CP (more than 'document' and 'blog' modes)
• Link/blogroll area in right sidebar
• Redesign the back end options interface and add more options to micro-manage functionality
• Style sheet organization, standardization and cleanup, and add explanatory comments
• Add panel to detect new versions from commentpress site
• Remove non-standard wordpress functions (hacks)

For a list of bugs that we're currently fixing, see the bug reports.

How to read/write comments

Comments on specific paragraphs:

Click the icon to the right of a paragraph

  • If there are no prior comments there, a comment entry form will appear automatically
  • If there are already comments, you will see them and the form will be at the bottom of the thread

Comments on the page as a whole:

Click the icon to the right of the page title (works the same as paragraphs)

Please give us feedback on the pdf draft of the new View All Comments feature. Thanks!

KF on paragraph 3:

My only question as of this point is where, in the stream of all comments, comments on a page as a whole will fall. Above the individual paragraph comments? Below? Will the functionality of whole-page comments work like individual paragraph (+) comments?

jdwilbur on paragraph 3:

Good question. After a second look I see that I left that detail out. It would work the same as a paragraph comment, and it would appear at the top.

Papier Machine on paragraph 2:

I’d love to use commentpress, but I don’t want to downgrade to WP2.2. When do you expect to have a running version for WP 2.3?
Thanx!

Ben Vershbow on paragraph 2:

Hard to say. Probably not until sometime in December. Resources are extremely limited right now but we’re pulling things together for the next big push. Thanks for being patient.

James Farmer on paragraph 2:

Can you tell us the specific issues that the theme is having and we’ll see if we can fix it for you.

Edublogs is a big fan of commentpress so anything we can do to help will be a pleasure.

That and we’re upgrading and don’t want to disable the theme!

Cheers, James

Rick on paragraph 2:

Mighty glad to hear that James Farmer & Edublogs are interested in lending their help, as I’m hoping to get together the money to pay for 3 years of our own installation of edublogs, and CommentPress seems like a must-have plugin.

Papier Machine on paragraph 2:

It would be great to make commentpress compatible with wp-footnotes http://www.elvery.net/drzax/more-things/wordpress-footnotes-plugin/

Alan Levine on paragraph 2:

We’ve gotten great feedback on a test implementation on CP for an NMC whitepaper on Evolution of communication (http://web.nmc.org/communication/), much more tha what we got in terms of comments in our web site version.

So now our folks want to do a lot of pubs in this format, and I’m looking at WP Multi-user to support this- eager to see when q 2.3 version of the template will be ready.

Alan Levine on whole page :

Any idea when a WP 2.3.1 compatible version will be ready? Our org has an interest in putting up all of our pubs in this format, so I am trying to get it to work in WPMu to no avail,

G on whole page :

CommentPress won’t work with WPMU and this has nothing to with WP 2.3.x. The issue is that WPMU handles various things differently than regular WP, so CommentPress would need to be changed to take that those differences into consideration.

Keith Webster on paragraph 4:

Hi there,

We are using WordPress MU at the University of Victoria for distance courses and program community building. Are there any plans for the CommentPress theme to work with WordPress MU?

Thanks,

Keith Webster

dc on paragraph 2:

One feature I’m really hoping to see is the ability to break up long chapters into multiple pages using the tag (currently supported by wordpress). As it is now, if the post is broken up into multiple pages, a comment for paragraph 3 would be linked to the 3rd paragraph for every page of that chapter, not just to the one page it was meant to be linked to (sorry for the awkward wording there — I hope you can understand!).

Also, I would love to see some form of footnotes feature implemented as Papier Machine wrote above. Instead, I was forced to write my own footnote script that worked with commentpress.

Sorry, the tag didn’t show up. It’s:

(hopefully it’ll show up this time)

It would be great if somehow a commented .doc could be generated from a comment press page.

I think this paragraph is particularly noteworthy.
